No Book Like It
Do you ever feel like you’re swimming in a sea of opinions and theories, wondering if there is any possible way of knowing what really is true and what isn’t?
Out of all the books in this world you will find that none hold a candle to the authority, power, and relevancy of God’s Word, the Bible. When Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate, He said, “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Probably squinting in curiosity, Pilate responded, “What is truth?” This question is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago.
In the longest chapter in the Bible (176 verses) the psalmist wrote, “The sum of Your word is truth (Ps 119:160). When Jesus Christ prayed to His Father for His disciples, He said, “Sanctify them in the truth, Your word is truth” (John 17:17). The Bible is true. Regardless of people's opinions for or against it, the Bible still stands true. The Bible gives nothing less than full, absolute, and perfect truth in every situation and every culture.
And this truth is not some archaic, irrelevant stodgy list of rules that no longer relates to everyday life. The Bible can help us today as much as it helped people 20 centuries ago. Paul tells us that all Scripture is “God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Tim 3:16). This word “profitable” means “practical” or “ready to be used.” God did not give us a pointless book on religion but words of life that show men and women how to be forgiven of their sins and to live lives that count.
Do you like to live with purpose, satisfaction, joy, and peace? Then you have come to the right Book—the only one that can tell you exactly how to do this.
There is no Book like it. The ancient orator, Chrysostom, compared it to a breathtaking garden draped in bows and flowers. The Qumran community revered it so greatly that if they erred in copying a single word, they sealed the manuscript in a special jar and gave it its own burial.
Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, said of the Bible, “That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests. “ Charles Dickens called the New Testament the “very best book that was or ever will be known in the world.” It was George Washington who said, “It is impossible to righteously govern the world without God and the Bible,” and it was Ronald Reagan who stated, “Within the covers of one single book, the Bible, are all the answers to all the problems that face us today--if only we would read and believe.”
The Bible has not only been recognized by great leaders, but has proven itself again and again as it brings hope, joy, and help for every soul who is humble enough to believe and willing enough to obey.
Charles Spurgeon, the great 19th century preacher from England asserted, “The Bible is a letter from Him, and we prize it beyond the finest gold.” The Bible is not some opinion poll concocted by silly men trying to promote their agenda. It is the Word of God. It is God-breathed (2 Tim 3:16). And it has proven itself through several hundred fulfilled prophecies, historical accuracy, and archeological confirmation. It is no wonder 4th century Saint Augustine said, “When the Bible speaks, God speaks!”
As you seek to learn the precious Word of God, consider the words of one anonymous author who put it beautifully:
This book contains: the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers.
Its doctrine is holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.
Read it to be wise, believe it to be saved, and practice it to be holy.It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.
It is the traveler's map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter.
Here heaven is opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end.
It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet.
Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, health to the soul and a river of pleasure.
It is given to you here in this life, will be opened at the Judgment and is established forever.
It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and condemn all who trifle with its contents.
