Holly and the Lord

After talking to our server more than three times I started getting convicted about zero effort on my part to make any effort to reach out to her. Kimberly my wife and I looked for a tract but couldn't find one.

When Holly returned I asked, "Holly, may I ask you a big question?" We had already developed quite a rapport when she brought one of our daughters the wrong meal, which moved me to tell her, "This will probably show up on your review," after which her manager came over and apologized.

Holly knew I was  kidding so this helped build a relational bridge into the big question she was about to hear: "If today was your last day on earth, and you found yourself standing before God, and God said, 'Why would I forgive you of your sins and let you into heaven?' what would you say?"

"The other day I read this email," she replied, "that said God doesn't care about what kind of car your drive but how many people you gave trips to with it. So I'd say, 'Because I've given millions of people rides in my car.'"

"Have you ever wondered about how to get your sins forgiven though? For example..." I took her through several of the Ten Commandments and she admitted she was a liar and adulterer at heart. But she said she had never stolen anything before.

"Have you ever downloaded music for which you didn't pay the copyright?"

"Ooh, you got me on that one!" she laughed.

"As a lying, thief, and adulterer at heart," I continued, "as I am too, what does God do about those sins? You know that giving car rides to people won't take them away."

"You're right," said Holly. "But I think He just forgives them."

"You believe God is good don't you?"

"Yes."

"Which means He's also just, right?"

"Yes."

"How does a just God ignore our sins? The Bible says we deserve to suffer hell for those sins."

"You're right" she said. She didn't know what to say at this point so I continued.

"God paid for your sins through Jesus Christ. Jesus took on the penalty for you. And if you respond by giving your whole life to Jesus—I don't mean saying, 'I believe in Jesus'—but actually surrendering your heart and will to Him, He will save you forever."

Holly spend the next 6-7 minutes sharing with us about her trials with her boyfriend, a poential lawsuit creeping up on her, and her past negative experiences in churches. I gave her the website of our college ministry and invited her to visit. Then we tipped her almost 50% of the meal just to show her we really do care. My wife and I walked away amazed that God let such a random meetng turn into such in-depth ministry!
