Tips and Thoughts on Evangelism and the Gospel

People get confused over the method of evangelism versus the method. But this is a dangerous confusion because the method is entirely negotiable, but the message isn't.

Most Christians are terrified at sharing their faith. But they shouldn't be. There is no safer place on earth than to be in God's will. Evangelism is the most natural response to true conversion.

Sorting out the method from the message makes evangelism ten times easier and more natural. You don't have to beat on doors to be legitimately evangelizing. But nor is someone being fair if he condemns witnessing to strangers. God delights in using all sorts of methods and His Son never once commanded a single method for evangelism. In fact, to say that any one method is illegitimate is an insult to the power of God's gospel and His Spirit who opens the heart to it. God's gospel is never straight-jacketed by any method.

At the same time this does not mean that we shouldn't be wise in the method we use. At speaker's corner in London people from all over the world show up to stand on boxes to debate religion. If you want to share the gospel there, you're going to have trouble getting anyone to listen to you if you aren't ready to be strong and direct. But standing on a lunch box in front of your neighbor's front door is probably not going to get you anywhere. Except perhaps jail.

How wonderful that we have one message to speak, one Spirit to apply it, and an infinite number of methods our awesome God can use!
