Oversized Caulking Gun Creates Witnessing Opportunity

God never ceases to amaze me.

I'm one of those insane people who decides to remodel his basement at the same time of life when I'm going to school, pastoring college ministry, leading evangelism ministry, and trying to upload a ton of website material that's sitting on my hard drive.

A few weeks ago I purchased a caulking gun at Lowe's, stuck in the glue tube, and started squeezing the handle. No glue came out. I guess I'm one of those intelligent people who tries to make something work before checking to see if I have the right tools. Alas! I was using a massively over-sized caulking gun and the glue tube was now half smashed and more wrinkled than a Galapagos tortoise.

So I returned to Lowe's in humiliation to replace my caulking gun with the right size. My two sons were with me and the lady across the counter was named Jackie. The transaction finished, no people behind me waiting—the opportunity was perfect. "May I ask you a question?" I asked.

Before she could even conceive a response, one of my sons let out a blood-curdling scream, sharp enough to power the entire city of Monsterville. Apparently one son accidentally threw his forehead into the face of the other. "There goes that opportunity," I thought as I diagnosed the damage. No damage, just drama. I decided this wasn't God's timing for witnessing and walked on.

But I was wrong. "What was your question?" a voice called out after me. I returned and had one of the most thrilling witnessing conversations I've had in months. Jackie said God would let her into heaven because she kept the Golden Rule. I asked her if she had ever lied, lusted, or stolen like I had. She admitted "yes" to all three. I asked her if God is perfectly holy and His standards do not adjust to our sins, how could He let a lying, thieving, adulterer at heart like her and myself into heaven?

Jackie admitted that something wasn't adding up in her theology. "But there is Someone who did keep the Golden Rule perfectly," I explained. "And He not only kept the Golden Rule when you and I broke it, but He paid the price for your lies, thievery, and lustings." Jackie responded, "My daughter talks about this stuff all the time!"

I encouraged her to think about it and she thanked me warmly.

Be encouraged that even when we are ready to give up on an opportunity, God doesn't throw in the towel so easily. He paves the way for your to share the gospel. Will you now walk down that path?
