Of Great Worth But Not Worthy

One theologian writes, "We are not worthy of Christ's sacrifice." Another retaliates, "But the greatness of Christ's payment shows the worth of people in the eyes of God!"

Both are right because each is using the term "worth" in a different way. There's a difference between being worthy of something and having worth. In the eyes of God you have great worth, infinite worth, a worth beyond calculation. That God would pay the price of His Son's blood to redeem your soul puts a price tag on you beyond measure. That's why the New Testament uses financial terms like "redemption" and "payment" to explain the meaning of Jesus' death. In our worse state, we were still worth dying for. That's value. Incredible value.

But this does not mean we were worthy of it. We didn't deserve it. Take the most holy moment of your entire life and you still do not deserve to be saved. It's all of grace.

"...who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds" (Titus 2:14).
