In his book, Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture, Graeme Goldsworthy states that the reformers gave three purposes for the Old Testament law (p. 166): 

1. To restrain human wickedness.
2. To convict of sin.
3. To instruct the people of God in righteousness.
