Do Not Seek Great Things

How easy it is to be more enamored with the blessings of God than the God of the blessings!

In the shortest chapter of the longest book of the Bible, God says to Baruch, the amanuensis of Jeremiah: "But you, are you seeking great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I am going to bring disaster on all flesh, but I will give your life to you as booty in all the places where you may go" (Jer 45:5).

How easily we seek the gift more than the Giver! How often we crave greatness more than God who is greater than all! When you find more fuilfillment in the promotion than the God who gave it to you, in the food than the God who made it for you, in the child than the God who created her for you, or in the ministry than the God you serve, you have traded in diamond pearls for plastic bottle caps. It's like the bride who finds more satisfaction in the ring than her husband who gave it to her, or the husband who looks forward more to the act of intimacy, then his dear wife whom he is intimate with.

"Oh, God, make the stench of this foolish thinking putrid to our hearts! Convict our willingness to drink from broken cisterns instead of You, the fountain of living waters (Jer 2:13)! Help our one and only pursuit to be this: to know You, for anything less will leave us empty and dissatisified."
